Where did the dps go?

I’m frustrated. For the past couple of raids, I’ve been in the top 10 dps. This is an issue because I’m the tank. Sometimes I’m the healer. (No, but really.) I’m not even the highest damage tank and I’m beating people at their own job. What’s the point of even bringing dps? A tank is easier to heal, can hold the boss if needed, doesn’t get one-shotted for mistakes and apparently kills things faster.

I wonder if this is a curse among other casual raiding guilds. We have great tanks and solid healers. But dps? Other than our core officers (the few who aren’t tanks and healers), we have maybe 5 dps who can beat the tanks. We occasially recruit the odd decent dpser, but after a week, we lose them to hardcore guilds. What is it that makes a good tank or healer stick around despite the short raids and slow progression, but scares off the dps?

I do play ret once in awhile and I’d say it’s the spec I like least for raids. To me, there are two motivations to dps: the feeling of being on vacation and the fun of competing for a top spot on the meters. I’m guessing that full time dps tend to be motivated by one of those reasons more than the other. Those who dps because they don’t like the pressure that comes with healing or tanking, who are happy to hang out with their gaming buddies no matter how often we wipe on Hodir, they love a guild that won’t kick them for being bad players. I would assume that those who like to be on top, who studied advanced calculus so they can min/max their toons, who pay close attention to their recount, are competitive in other aspects of the game, such as killing new bosses and getting new loot. Those Hodir wipes don’t make for fruitful nights…

There is competition among tanks and healers, however I believe it’s far easier to be a good tank or a good healer without being very competitive than it is to be a good dps. The motivations for tanking and healing go beyond simply doing well on the meters. Knowing that your performance is crucial to raid success, and all your mishaps being obvious, is enough to keep you on your toes. Plus there seems to be a sense of community among the tanks and healers within our casual guild, which contributes in keeping them in around, even if they could meet the standards of more serious guilds.

So what should we do to keep our bosses from hitting their enrage timers? In many cases, there’s only so much we can do. If raiding with the big kids is what it takes for someone to stay satisfied, I’m not going to hold them back. Yet perhaps a stronger sense of community within the different classes or roles may offer good players a reason to play well beyond topping the meters. Also, for the dps who have a carebear (or a know-it-all) side, perhaps getting more involved in planning offnight raids or offering suggestions to more…struggling…players can motivate our more laidback dps to put extra effort into their play.

And maybe, someday, us tanks will be back at the bottom of the dps meter where we feel happiest.
