I have used different emails for different aspects of my life.

I was actually very sad when I graduated college and they cancelled my .edu email.

Though I do have to admit I have them all forwarded and linked to post from the same client. That is helpful.

I'm glad to hear that story ended well!

I have to admit I'm pretty open about my personal life online and make long distance friendships quite easily. I have a couple of guildies on Facebook and I even went as far as sleeping on a guildie's couch during a guild meetup weekend. But I am constantly weighing risks vs benefits in the back of my mind. So far things have worked out well. I haven't gotten in trouble and I have run into a creeper.

When I was younger, I did get myself into a few embarrassing situations, nothing drastic, but enough to teach me some lessons. I've noticed that over the years, I've become way more cautious in my flirting, much more sensitive to behaviours that seem strange and I focus almost exclusively on the pluses and neutrals in my life so I don't accidentally piss off the wrong people.

Good point. The world is a crazy place, you never know what'll hit you next.

Really good tips by the way! Some of it is common sense, but especially the advice regarding (online) friendship is an eye-opener.

Don't let this make you sad by the way, because it's not a sad story. I recently found out that a WoW friend fell in love with my wife. They talked it over and I never knew until it was over. He was scared like hell that I would find out because we're mutual friends and he wanted to stay that way. In the end, nobody got hurt, nothing notable happened and we all just had a good laugh about it. And we're still friends :-)

I guess what I'm trying to say here is, that I'm happy neither my wife or me ever give anything more than a first name to people we meet online. And that's only if we build up a friendship over time.
